Tax Information Sharing Rules pressed ahead by EU

11 November, 2009

Anders Borg - Minister for Finance will chair the ECOFIN meeting on Tuesday 10 November 2009. One of the key issues to be discussed is the further handling of the financial and economic crisis.

On Tuesday the 10 November at the Economic and Financial Affairs Council meeting in Brussels ministers will be asked to agree to the general approach for an EU directive banning countries from refusing to supply tax information on the basis of bank secrecy, and to the extent to which it will apply the rules to countries like Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

In a statement on ECOFIN’s agenda in the Commons, Chancellor Alistair Darling said “The UK supports the proposal and further work in this area, which links to the wider G20 agenda on good governance in taxation.”
