HMRC to cut jobs, thus closing the public spending deficit

In an attempt to close the gap in the UK’s £167bn public spending deficit, the HMRC is preparing to cut 25,000 jobs and close more than 200 offices by 2011. In the Business Plan for the next financial year the HMRC has revealed that they are committed to:
- Stopping tax evaders by ensuring that they are subjected to robust and effective civil and criminal action
- Closing the gap in the public spending deficit.
The chief executive said that while it would be tough, as it would need to reduce its workforce as it rose to the challenge, the HMRC would remain an exciting place to work for as it became smaller with a more highly skilled workforce.
With its powers to cut across all taxes allowing the HMRC to carry out checks and visit business premises without giving advance notice, as well are introducing penalties for late payments, it is geared up to make a difference.
