Fewer opportunities for contractors
23 June, 2011
In May, according to the latest Reed Job Index, UK job opportunities have dropped back for the second consecutive month. The retail, leisure and tourism sectors are leading the way with demand growing in consultancy, logistics, strategy and transport.
The Reed Job Index was first published in December 2009 and the Index’s baseline was set at 100. The year-on-year Job Index demand stands at 121, up 18 points on the Job Index.
The Salary Index has dropped to 98 after wages for new positions were found to be 2% lower in real terms than they were in the final month of 2009. The private sector growth has fed the increase, with the public sector registering a 9 point increase in May to give the Reed Public Sector Job Index a total of 59.
Mr. James Reed, chairman, said that there were more people looking for jobs now because of salary freezes and price and tax increases. Reed commented that 97% of employers ranked ‘mindset’ above ‘skill set’ and said that candidates must make their CV stand out.
