Apology from the HMRC for online tax return problems
01 February, 2009
An online glitch in the system for filing self-assessment tax returns led to confusion among taxpayers. However, the HMRC has apologized for a fault on their website which affected some users in that they might have received a response stating that forms submitted online had been successful, whereas the forms suite indicated they had been rejected, with no reason given for the negative response. As a result, many contractors and freelance consultants may not be able print their P60 forms until this has been sorted out.
The HMRC expects to have the problem resolved before May 31st, which will allow enough time to view, print and store the P60 forms. Penalties will not be applicable should businesses be unable to provide the P60 forms to workers by the due date.
A spokesman for the HMRC said that they were currently working with their service partners to resolve the issue as a matter of urgency, a fix had been identified and would be implemented as soon as possible and that they would keep the public updated with the fix date as it became known.
